At the end of 2020, I was contacted by Viv T., the host/executive producer of the What Gives Podcast, in hopes that I could assist in designing cover art for her podcast. Designing a podcast cover was a new kind of project for me so I was excited to be a part of this process!

Inspiration

In order to get an idea of the direction we were headed, I asked Viv if she had any kind of images that reflected a mood she wanted the cover to have. A specific request she made was to include the action of one hand dropping a microphone into another. To provide me with visuals of what she wanted, she was able to send me the following images:

Initial Color Palette

The inspiration images gave me a great head start as to where Viv wanted to take the logo as well as the mood she wanted to set. In addition, Viv was also able to provide me with a color palette that would play a reoccurring theme across the podcast's social media.

Design Variations

After reviewing all of the material Viv sent me and taking some time to understand exactly what it was that she wanted; I was able to come up with the following design:

Instead of one hand dropping a microphone into another hand, I wanted to reflect the action of Viv handing the microphone to the organizations she's interviewing. The purpose of this design was to show her utilizing her platform to give others a voice to speak about their missions.

Once we were able to come to a mutual agreement about the design, we decided to play around with the colors and came up with the two alternatives above.

Alternative 1 (Left): The color was a bit too dark and gave off more of a mysterious/dangerous kind of mood as color psychology/studies show that red is typically used for alerts.

Alternative 2 (Right): The orange was the path we decided worked best however this certain type of shade of orange contained a bit too much saturation so we tried adding a slight touch of brightness to it.

Final Color Palette

After testing the color combinations, brainstorming and some adjustments of some tones; we were able to condense the palette to three final colors.

It was fun being able to take bits and pieces of what Viv was looking for and mash them together resulting in this cover piece. I enjoyed testing my creative ability and stepping outside of my comfort zone. The cover art, while simple, clearly projects the purpose of the podcast and its mission. Its a great podcast with insightful content; I recommend taking some time to give it a listen!
